The students of Start-Rite Schools Day Secondary had an excursion to the National Children’s Park and Zoo on Thursday 20th June 2019. Located in Asokoro behind the presidential villa lies a large expanse of land that has animals, a play area for kids and a lakeside cafe in an area designated as the National Children’s Park & Zoo.
The Zoo has a variety of animals; lions, crocodiles, buffalo, horses, zebras, ostriches, tortoises, hyena and rabbits to name a few. This allowed students to observe the animals in a controlled natural habitat, reinforcing their studies in Agricultural Science, Biology and Physical Health Education. Some of the topics covered included Animal Classification, Food Chain and Food Webs, Habitat, Ecosystem, Forests and Physical fitness. The excursion was of interest to would be the Veterinarians amongst the students.
One of the advantages of this location is also the stunning view of Aso Rock.
The excursion was a good way to put into practise the concept of active outdoor learning. In Outdoor Learning students learn through what they do, through what they encounter and through what they discover. Participants learn about the outdoors, themselves and each other, while also learning outdoor skills.
